Why our tallow soap is different

Whether it be walking down the supermarket isles, or shopping online, the market is oversaturated with the numerous amounts of soap there is for us to pick from. Here at Matakana Tallow Co, we believe in making traditional body care that contains minimal ingredients.

Our body soaps are made using the traditional cold-process method. That means we start with the individual ingredients and make every batch from scratch. Rather than melting down a pre-made soap base or using a commercially produced cleansing base, we carefully combine oils and fats with lye to create real soap through the natural process of saponification. Once poured, each batch is given time to slowly cure. This allows excess water to evaporate, creating a harder, longer-lasting bar. While some commercially produced soaps are manufactured for speed and consistency at a large scale, we take a slower approach.This takes each batch a longer process, but it’s something we think is worth it.

Grass-fed beef tallow is at the heart of what we do. Tallow has been used in traditional soapmaking for generations and creates a beautifully firm, creamy bar with a rich lather. We source our tallow from grass-fed beef and use it as the foundation of our soap, combined with carefully chosen ingredients to create a simple, effective bar for everyday use.

We don't believe a good bar of soap needs an unnecessarily complicated ingredient list. Our focus is on choosing ingredients with purpose and using traditional soapmaking methods to turn them into something practical, beautiful and enjoyable to use.

There may be faster ways to make soap, but for us, slower feels better!
